Pike fishing in the Danube Delta
Pike are large predatory fish at the top of the aquatic food chain in the Delta waters. Nicknamed the 'wolf of the marshes', pike is an insatiable fish, which is why it can reach large sizes, sometimes weighing over 12 kg. Pike are among the most coveted trophies in any angler's photo collection. At Holbina, pike are big, so we recommend a stronger rod. When it comes to bait, pike are attracted to large plugs, soft plastic lures or spoons. The lure is chosen according to the size of the fish: the bigger the pike, the bigger the bait. Pike fishing requires a lot of technique and experience, which develops over time.
Autumn Season: the Best Time for Pike
From September to November, pike in Holbina's lakes become most active: the water cools down, predators hunt in more open water, and your chances of landing a trophy over 10 kg rise considerably. It is the season most passionate pike anglers wait for — and since the lakes are private, you can also come outside this window without running into the closed season.

The catfish is the giant of our waters: a massive predator that fights long and hard and rewards the patient angler. The Holbina lakes are stocked with catfish, and our guides know exactly where the big specimens hide. Catfish sessions unfold in the silence of the private waters, with tackle matched to the forces at play and, as with every session at Holbina, exclusively with artificial lures.
Perch fishing — the fish that gave us our name
Holbina Trei Bibani is named after the perch ('biban' in Romanian), the emblematic fish of these waters. Large perch gather in schools in our lakes and offer fast-paced sessions, perfect also for beginners or for children. This is where family fishing makes sense: every cast can bring a new catch.
Private lakes and fishing rules
Fishing at Holbina takes place in private lakes, carefully managed for the balance of the ecosystem and the quality of the sessions. Because the lakes are private, you do not need the mandatory ARBDD fishing permit required on the Delta's public channels and lakes, and the legal pike closed season (1 February – 7 June) that applies to public waters does not apply in our lakes — you can fish for pike at Holbina all year round. Access is simply based on a voucher issued by the administrator, and the rules below protect the fish and keep the fishing story true:
- Fishing is allowed exclusively with artificial lures; live bait is forbidden
- Each lure may carry at most one treble hook, for safe fish release
- We practise catch and release: fish are lifted with the landing net and placed on an unhooking mat
- Large fish are held with two hands for photos, never by the gill covers or eyes

Which fish species can I catch at Holbina Trei Bibani?
In our private lakes you can fish for pike, catfish and perch. Pike is the queen of these waters and can exceed 12 kg, Delta catfish provide unforgettable fights, and the perch even gave our resort its name.
How much does a fishing package at Holbina cost?
Weekday fishing packages start at 2,500 lei/person for 3 days. The most popular is the 5-day package, at 4,500 lei/person. The price includes boat fishing, double room accommodation, full board and return transfer from Dunavatul de Jos. The full list is on the Offers page.
Can I fish without staying overnight?
Yes, depending on availability we also offer one-day fishing sessions. Call us or message us on WhatsApp and we will check the open days together.
What baits are allowed at Holbina?
Artificial lures only — live bait is forbidden. Each lure may carry at most one treble hook, and caught fish are released safely using a landing net and an unhooking mat.
How do I get from Dunavatul de Jos to the lakes?
The fast boat transfer takes about 45 minutes through the Delta channels. It is included in the price of the fishing and accommodation packages; for individual reservations it is charged separately, according to the listed rates.
Do I need an ARBDD fishing permit at Holbina?
No. The ARBDD fishing permit is only mandatory on the public channels and lakes of the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve. Holbina's lakes are private and managed directly by the resort, so access is simple, based on the voucher included in your package — no separate ARBDD paperwork needed.
What is the best season for sport fishing at Holbina?
Pike bite best in spring and autumn (September-November), when the water cools down and predators become active. Catfish are more active in summer, on warm nights, while perch fish well all season, from May to October. Since the lakes are private, you can book a great session in any of these periods, without the crowds found in the Delta's public areas.
Can I fish for pike during the closed season (1 February – 7 June)?
Yes. The legal pike closed season applies to the Danube Delta's public waters, not to Holbina's private lakes, which are managed directly by the resort. You can fish for pike with us all year round, including during the period when fishing is banned on public waters.
