Autumn in the Danube Delta at Holbina: birds and photography
Autumn is the Danube Delta's second migration season. In September and October the number of species you can see rises again, and the low morning light is good for photography. At Holbina you head out by boat or kayak on the private lake and the quiet channels around the resort, away from the traffic of the public channels.
The autumn migration: September and October
The Danube Delta is Europe's largest wetland and a UNESCO biosphere reserve, home to more than 300 bird species. Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are the migration seasons, when the number of visible species rises considerably.
Around Holbina you can see egrets, herons, cormorants, many species of wild ducks and geese, and migrating birds of prey. The species you see vary from day to day; there is no guaranteed list.
Photography: sunrise and sunset
The first hours of the morning and sunset are the most active times: birds are feeding and the water is calm. That is also when the light is best for photography, with sunrises over the water and flocks in flight.
A long zoom lens helps a lot. The boat can stop close enough for good shots without disturbing the birds. Wear muted colours and pack an extra layer: autumn mornings on the water are cool.
By boat or by kayak
The resort has 25 boats and 10 kayaks. From the boat, the engine is switched off in good spots and the boat drifts quietly. A kayak takes you into narrow channels a motorboat cannot reach, without any noise at all.
Local guides are optional and booked separately. They know the places and times when birds are most active. For boat or kayak outings, ask in advance about availability and conditions for your dates.
Autumn and pike fishing
Autumn is also a popular season for pike fishing. On Holbina's private lake only overnight guests fish, with artificial lures, at most one treble hook per lure and at most 3 anglers per boat; every fish is released (catch and release).
We do not guarantee catches or fish size. You can split the day: a birdwatching outing early in the morning, then a fishing session.
Getting there and what to check
Boarding is at Pensiunea Califar in Dunavățul de Jos, at the time agreed with reception; the boat ride takes about 45 minutes. The pools are open only from 1 June to 1 September, so in autumn the programme is built around outings on the water, the restaurant and the quiet of the resort.
Send us your dates, the number of people and what you want to do (birdwatching, photography, fishing). The team confirms accommodation, transfer and activities; weather and navigation can change the programme.
