Catfish is the king of the Danube Delta — the largest freshwater predator in our waters, capable of topping 40-50 kg in Holbina's well-stocked lakes. It is also the least understood of the three fish we offer: many first-time anglers expect a fight like a pike's, full of jerks and jumps, and are surprised by the heavy, almost motionless resistance of a big catfish on the line — more like dragging a sandbag than an agile fight.
Catfish is a bottom feeder, most active at dusk, at night and on overcast days, when it sees poorly but reads water vibrations perfectly through its lateral line. On bright days it retreats into deep holes, next to sunken logs or steep banks, and only comes out to hunt as the light fades. That is why the most productive sessions at Holbina start in the evening and run into the first part of the night, with the guide knowing exactly which part of the lake holds the big specimens that day.
The optimal period is May-June and September-October, when water temperature suits the catfish's metabolism — not too cold (it turns sluggish in winter) and not too hot (summer heat makes it less active by day). Since these are private lakes with no closed season, you can try a catfish session outside these windows too; the odds simply improve considerably in these two.
The preferred technique at Holbina is exclusively artificial lures, as required by our own rules — live bait is forbidden. Big soft plastics (15-20 cm shads), jigged slowly near the bottom with long pauses between pulls, work best — catfish usually attacks a bait that is sitting still, not one that is fleeing. At night, loud surface lures ("waker" style) can trigger spectacular strikes right at the surface, close to the banks.
Recommended tackle: a sturdy rod of at least 2.7-3.6 m with high power (catfish or heavy jig class), a 4000-6000 size reel with a large line capacity, plus 0.30-0.40mm braided line — a big catfish fighting from the bottom puts real strain on knots and underprepared gear. A strong quality hook and an abrasion-resistant leader complete the rig.
After landing one, a big catfish should be handled carefully: support it with both hands, horizontally, never lifted vertically by the mouth (it can hurt its spine), and release it quickly, right by the boat, after the obligatory photo.
