Perch fishing: lures, techniques and seasons
Perch are predators that usually hunt in shoals: where you catch one, there are often more. They attack small lures worked close to structure, and light tackle makes the session much more enjoyable. At Holbina you fish for perch and pike on the same private lake of 1,200 hectares, with artificial lures only and catch and release.
Tackle: light, but ready for pike
Perch anglers usually use light rods of 2–2.4 m with a casting weight of a few grams, and a small reel. Thin braided line transmits bites well, and a fluorocarbon leader is less visible in clear water.
At Holbina, perch and pike live in the same water, and a pike may take a small perch lure. A thicker leader or a thin bite-proof leader helps you keep both the fish and the lure.
The lures that work for perch
Perch prefer small lures, usually 3 to 7 cm: soft plastic twisters and shads on light jig heads, inline spinners, small crankbaits and drop shot baits. Natural colours work well in clear water, and bright ones in murky water or low light.
At Holbina only artificial lures are allowed, with at most one treble hook per lure. Many small crankbaits have two trebles: check them before you leave and pack single-treble models. Live bait is not allowed.

Where to find them in every season
In summer, perch hunt fry, especially early in the morning and in the evening. Sometimes you see them at the surface, where small fish jump out of the water: a lure cast to the edge of that area can bring instant bites. For the rest of the day, look along reed edges and weedy areas.
In autumn, the shoals gather and bigger perch become more active; move often until you find the shoal. In winter and early spring, in cold water, perch stay closer to the bottom and respond to slow presentations with long pauses.
How to work the lure
When you catch a perch, cast again to the same spot: most of the time the shoal is still there. If the bites stop, change the size or colour of the lure before you change spots.
Vary the retrieve: short twitches with pauses, a slow steady retrieve, or a lure held almost still on a drop shot. Perch often strike during the pause.
Releasing a perch
Perch have a dorsal fin with hard spines. To avoid getting pricked, grip the fish from front to back, folding the fin down with your palm, and unhook it with small pliers.
Keep it out of the water as briefly as possible and release it quickly. At Holbina every catch is released, all year round.
