Predator fishing tackle we use in the Delta
Many amateur anglers arrive in the Danube Delta without the right kit for a successful session — or bring everything they own "just in case" and end up hauling half of it around for nothing. At Holbina, where you fish from a boat with a maximum of 3 anglers on board and artificial lures only, the right kit is simpler than it sounds: a few well-chosen rods matter more than a box full of lures you never use.

For pike, go for a 2.1-2.4m spinning rod with medium-high power (15-40g casting), suited to bigger lures. The most effective baits are surface and medium-diving wobblers (10-16 cm), size 3-5 spinning spoons and soft lures on 10-20g jig heads, in natural colours (perch, roach) or aggressive ones (fire tiger) on overcast days. A 3000-4000 size reel with 0.14-0.18mm braided line, plus a thick steel or fluorocarbon leader (pike have teeth), completes the rig.

For catfish, the tackle needs to be far heavier: a 2.7-3.6m high-power rod, a 4000-6000 reel with a large line capacity and 0.30-0.40mm braid. Large soft lures (15-20cm shads), jigged slowly near the bottom, or loud surface lures for night fishing, are the standard choice at Holbina — see our full catfish fishing guide for the technique step by step.

Perch, the friendliest predator for beginners and children, responds beautifully to light tackle: an ultra-light 1.8-2.1m rod, a 1000-2500 reel, thin 0.10-0.12mm line and small lures — size 1-2 spinners, 2-5g micro-jigs or 4-6cm miniature wobblers. Sessions are fast-paced, with plenty of catches, and need no prior experience.

Accessories that matter more than you'd think: a solid landing net (not a small souvenir-shop one), long pliers for safely unhooking, an unhooking mat for photos with big specimens, a phone or camera in a waterproof case, and layered clothing — mornings on the lake can be cold even in summer. Polarised glasses help you spot fish near the surface, especially on sunny days.

What not to bring: live bait (forbidden by our rules at Holbina — we fish exclusively with artificial lures) and gear that is awkward to carry in the boat. Our guides already carry a selection of lures tested on our own lakes and can tell you, depending on the season and the weather, what is working best on the day.
