Holbina pike: the "wolf of the waters" from private lakes

Nicknamed the wolf of the waters, pike is the most feared predator in the Delta's waters — an insatiable fish at the top of the food chain, capable of reaching impressive sizes. In Holbina's lakes, where fishing pressure is controlled and the population constantly renews itself, pike grow undisturbed year-round and frequently exceed 10-12 kg. Every trip starts the same way: the boat, the guide and silence — then that unmistakable tug every pike angler recognises instantly.

Autumn, the best time for pike fishing in the Danube Delta

Pike calendar: spring and autumn are the best times

Pike bite best when the water is cooler: early spring and, especially, autumn, between September and November. During this window, the Delta's waters cool down, predators become much more active and hunt in more open water, and the odds of a trophy over 10 kg rise considerably. Since these are private lakes, you can still book a great session in any month of the year, without depending on the public season or the crowds in the Delta's open areas.

No closed season on private lakes

The legal pike closed season (1 February - 7 June) applies exclusively to the Danube Delta's public waters, managed by ARBDD. Holbina's lakes are private and managed directly by the resort, so pike fishing stays legal all year round, including during the period when public waters are closed. This is exactly why many of our anglers choose this window: the public waters rest, while at Holbina the fishing continues as usual.

Lures and gear for pike fishing in the Danube Delta

Technique and gear: what lures catch pike at Holbina

Holbina's pike are large, so we recommend a sturdy rod and lures to match: big jerkbaits, soft plastic lures or wide spoons that imitate the baitfish pike feed on. The simple rule is that lure size grows with the pike you're targeting. Fishing is done exclusively with artificial lures, with a maximum of one hook per lure, and technique improves with time — our guides show you exactly where and how to cast in each lake.

The World Pike Fishing Cup, hosted at Holbina

Over the years, Holbina Trei Bibani has hosted the international World Pike Fishing Cup, with anglers from numerous countries — a recognition of the water quality and the density of big predators in the resort's lakes. The competition's story is part of the resort's history, alongside the thousands of successful trips of the anglers who have fished here.

Catch & release: how we protect the pike population

Every pike caught at Holbina is photographed and released safely, using a landing net and a receiving mat to minimise stress on the fish. Live bait is always prohibited, and each lure can have a maximum of one hook — rules that keep the lakes stocked with big specimens, year after year. The trophy stays in the photos; the pike stays in the water, for the next true story.
