Winter pike fishing in the Danube Delta: what works in cold water
In winter, pike don't disappear: they simply slow down. In cold water they feed less often but still hunt, and a well-prepared session can be one of the quietest of the year. On Holbina's private lake you can fish in the colder months too, with no closed season; the boat transfer depends on the weather and ice, so dates are agreed with our team.
How pike behave in cold water
As the water cools, a pike's metabolism slows. It feeds less often and saves energy, usually holding near structure, reed edges and drop-offs into deeper water, where the temperature is more stable.
Feeding windows are shorter. On cold days, the middle of the day, when the water warms slightly, is often the most productive.
Lures and presentation in the cold
The basic winter rule is a slow presentation. Soft shads on a jig head worked close to the bottom, and suspending jerkbaits with long pauses, give pike time to strike.
At Holbina only artificial lures are allowed, with no more than one treble per lure, so choose single-treble models. A bite-proof leader protects both the fish and your lure.
Clothing and safety in the boat
On the water the cold bites harder than on shore. Dress in layers with a waterproof outer shell, gloves and a hat, and bring a thermos of tea. Wear a life jacket at all times in the boat.
You bring your own tackle; the boat and fuel are included in fishing packages.
Catch and release in cold weather
In the cold, a proper release matters even more. Keep the pike in the water as much as possible, unhook it with long pliers, wet your hands before touching it and take the photo quickly. Very cold air can damage the gills and eyes if the fish stays out too long.
At Holbina every fish is released, all year round.
Planning a winter session
On the Danube Delta's natural waters, the pike closed season starts on 1 February (in 2026 it ran until 7 June). On Holbina's private lake fishing remains allowed for overnight guests.
Tell us your preferred dates and number of anglers: we confirm accommodation, the boat transfer and navigation conditions. Fishing packages run for 3, 4, 5 or 7 days.
